Most people replace door seals first and stay wet. On this platform the leak is usually somewhere else entirely, and three of the five most common causes cost nothing to fix. Diagnose in this order — cheapest and most likely first.
THE ONE TEST THAT SAVES THE MOST MONEY
Get someone inside the car with a flashlight and run a hose slowly over one area at a time — bottom of the door first, then upward, then the cowl, then the glass. Give each zone a full minute. Water travels along seams before it drips, so the wet spot is almost never below the entry point. Skipping this step is why people buy the wrong parts.
1. Door drains — start here, it's free
PLATFORM-COMMONDoors are designed to let water in. What matters is that it gets back out through the drain holes along the bottom edge of the door shell. Those holes pack with dirt and leaf debris, the door fills like a bathtub, and water finds its way over the inner sill and into the carpet.
Open the door, look along the bottom seam, and clear each hole with a piece of wire or trimmer line. If water runs out when you do, you found at least part of your problem. Do the rear quarter drains while you're there.
This is also the single most important rust prevention on the car — trapped water in the door is what rots the rockers from the inside.
2. The cowl — the leak everyone misdiagnoses
PLATFORM-COMMONIf the passenger footwell is wet but the doors check out, look at the cowl: the vented panel at the base of the windshield where fresh air enters. Leaves pack into the plenum below it, the drains block, and water backs up into the heater box and out onto the floor.
Clear the debris, verify the drains flow, then inspect the cowl seal itself. People chase door seals for months over this one because the symptom looks identical.
3. Seal contact — before you assume the rubber is dead
COMMUNITY-DOCUMENTEDOwners of these cars consistently report the same finding: the factory seals are still there, they've just shrunk. The rubber hasn't fallen off — the glass simply isn't reaching it anymore. That's an adjustment problem before it's a parts problem.
Working from easiest to hardest:
- Door alignment. Loosen the hinge bolts slightly and reposition so the door sits flush and closes against the seal evenly.
- Window vertical stops. Set them so the glass rises far enough to meet the upper seal without straining.
- Guide rails. There's a small amount of adjustment available; the glass path can be nudged toward the seal.
- Retaining tabs. Bending the metal tabs slightly outward brings the seal back toward the glass.
Do these in daylight with the hose test between attempts. If adjustment closes the gap, you're done and you've spent nothing.
4. Belt moldings — the upstream cause
COMMUNITY-DOCUMENTEDThe belt molding, or window sweep, wipes the glass as it travels and stops water entering the door in the first place. When the flocking wears through to the carrier, every rainfall dumps water inside the door — and then step one becomes critical.
Check the contact edge in good light. Grit-packed but intact can be cleaned. Worn to the carrier is finished. Suzuki discontinued these in 2023, so see the belt molding page for NOS hunting advice and reproduction status.
5. Hatch and quarter glass
VERIFY ON YOUR CARWater in the spare tire well points at the hatch. Before buying the perimeter seal, check two things: whether the latch is adjusted to pull the hatch down tight against the seal, and whether the leak is actually at the glass-to-hatch bond rather than the perimeter. Those are different repairs and they get confused constantly.
On 3-door cars, quarter glass leaks are frequently a body seam rather than the seal. Hose test with someone inside to separate them. Note that the 3-door quarter seal is body-style specific — a used part from a 5-door won't fit, which catches people out when buying second-hand.
6. Convertibles
COMMUNITY-DOCUMENTEDThe convertible versions have a documented reputation for leaking badly enough to rot floorpans and rockers. Before replacing rubber, check top tension and the header seal where the top meets the windshield frame — a loose top leaks regardless of seal condition.

Why is my Geo Metro carpet wet?
In rough order of likelihood: clogged door drains, a blocked cowl plenum, worn belt moldings letting water into the door, and shrunken door weatherstrip the glass no longer reaches. Start with the drains — they're free to clear and account for a large share of cases.
Can I use generic weatherstripping from a hardware store?
Owners have tried this for decades with poor results. Adhesive foam has no carrier to clip onto the door flange, sits at the wrong height, can't seal against moving glass, and tends to hold water against the paint. It's a stopgap at best.
My seals look fine but it still leaks. What am I missing?
Almost certainly contact rather than condition. Compression set shrinks the seal in place — it looks present and feels soft, but the glass stops half a millimetre short. Work through the adjustment sequence in section 3 before spending money.
Is it worth fixing the leaks on a car worth this little?
The leak isn't the expensive part — the rust it causes is. Water trapped in doors and rockers turns a running car into a structural write-off over a few seasons. Clearing drains and restoring seal contact is the cheapest possible insurance against that.
